Pregnancy is a time of your life when there are many changes to your body. Your mouth is no exception to this and that is why we wanted to share tips with you on how to care for your mouth during pregnancy.
Gingivitis Is Common During Pregnancy, Here's How To Prevent It
During pregnancy, your body experiences increased blood flow and hormonal changes that cause what is known as “pregnancy gingivitis”. Symptoms of gingivitis include loose teeth and gums that are red, swollen, and sensitive. If you are currently experiencing such symptoms, don't hesitate to visit or contact us. Early stages of gingivitis can be reversed before it develops into a severe case.
Preventing pregnancy gingivitis involves high levels of oral hygiene. Brush twice a day, every day, for two minutes at a time and rinse thoroughly (outside of pregnancy, it's best to not rinse to get the full benefits of fluoride). Floss every night to get rid of hidden plaque and choose healthy foods that are rich in nutrients over junk food.
Visit Us Frequently During Your Pregnancy
Another very helpful tip is to visit us often for professional cleaning. This is to help prevent oral infections that not only harm yourself, but to prevent any chance of the bacteria that cause oral infections from entering the bloodstream. Visiting our clinic frequently will also allow us to identify potential early infections. As mentioned above, catching dental conditions early will prevent them from progressing to severe stages, and since you are more at-risk during pregnancy, it is crucial to stay on top of this.
If you would like to visit us for a check-up or cleaning, give us a call and we will set up an appointment for you. This is an important time of your life- congratulations and stay safe!
