When you have children, you begin to see that everything is a game to them. This is great! Kids learn through play and this is an excellent opportunity for you as a parent to take something that they may see as a mundane chore and turn it into something fun and exciting. Take oral health care, for example, if your child finds brushing their teeth boring, they may resist you when it is time to brush or floss. Today we will look at a few ways to make oral hygiene more fun for kids, thus engaging them and encouraging them to care for their smiles.
When you are a child, two minutes can seem like an eternity. The American Dental Association recommends that your child should brush for a full two minutes, twice a day and floss at least once per day. Why not make this into a much anticipated fun time rather than a chore? Investing in a toothbrush that your child has helped choose is one way to get them involved in the process. Find a toothbrush that has been endorsed by the ADA, along with fluoridated toothpaste and let them help choose these items. The latest super hero or princess that they are obsessed with is a great way to get them excited about brushing their teeth.
Find a fun song or a light up timer that sings for two minutes and have fun with your child. Get into the bathroom with them as they brush and do it together, try looking at toothbrush time as an opportunity to spend a little one on one time with your child. When it is time to floss, you can purchase fun shaped and colored flosses for your child. Imagine flossing your teeth with a dinosaur? What fun!
