Sugar is not naturally damaging to your teeth in and of itself. If you brush regularly after consuming sugar, you will likely never experience any issues with it. However, since it is difficult to brush your teeth after eating or drinking something sugary, you will likely experience damage due to the acid produced from breaking down the sugar. This is the reason our staff recommends limiting sugar intake and to only consume it sparingly.
Oral Hygiene Problems Associated with Sugar
When you eat sugar, the bacteria on your teeth break it down. This process causes acid to be released into your mouth, which leads to an acidic environment on your teeth. When overexposed to acidity, the enamel on your teeth begins to soften and break down over time. Eventually, you begin to experience tooth sensitivity and increase your risk of developing both gum disease and tooth decay.
Tooth decay from sugar spreads quickly, making would-be small cavities into large cavities between office visits. If we discover a cavity is too large, removing the decay and filling it becomes significantly less of an option. We may need to perform a root canal or remove so much of your tooth that we will either must place a crown over it or remove it completely. These procedures can be costly and time-consuming.
In even worse scenarios, you may have begun developing gum disease, commonly known as periodontitis. Once you have periodontitis, the plaque and bacteria spread quickly, causing large pockets to form between your teeth. While we can help rid your gum disease, it will require you to get periodontal maintenance every three to four months. This is a deeper clean than you would typically get to prevent it from returning and is a life-long process moving forward.
