Digital X-Rays
Houston, TX

Doctor showing digital x-ray to a patient at Kevin Nail, DDS Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Houston, TXHere at Kevin Nail, DDS Family & Cosmetic Dentistry we use digital radiography technology to generate clear and concise x-rays. Using x-ray sensitive plates, our team can capture digital images of patients undergoing a diagnostic examination. Pixels captured produce clear images on our computer screen, without need for standard cassettes, as with older x-rays.

Why We Have Invested In Digital Radiography

There are multiple benefits that are derived by our patients and staff through the use of modern digital radiography. Firstly, this technology greatly improves time efficiency by rendering images immediately. Before this, patients had to make another appointment when the x-rays would be ready and available for review by our dentists. Now x-rays can be taken, examined and a treatment plan can be decided on within the same session. Less stress waiting to be treated, and better savings without the need for another consultation.

Another benefit is the reduced exposure to radiation. Digital radiography has lowered this exposure by up to 90%, making it safer for patients and our team. The quality and clarity of the images are also a big improvement on older x-ray imaging. There is also no need to make use of hazardous chemicals to develop the film. This is not just safer for our team, but also ensures no more toxic waste that can be damaging to the environment.

Not only is digital radiography quicker and more affordable, but it also allows for manipulation of images so that if there is a need for greater or lesser contrast to investigate specific areas, our team can do so within our offices. Diagnosis can be made more easily and correctly thanks to better image quality. Small hidden areas of decay can be better captured using this imaging and allow for early diagnosis and treatment. Because the images are digital, it also allows our dentists to confer with each other effortlessly, even when not in the same office, as the files can be electronically shared.

How It Works

In using this technology, we insert a sensor plate into your mouth, against the section of teeth that needs to be closely examined. Photons from the x-ray tube head will strike the sensor plate, collecting pixel data that is converted from analog to digital, and transferred to the imaging software on the connected computer. The software organizes the pixels in their correct location and uses various shades of gray to develop a full picture.

We then use the computer screen to display and store these digitalized images. One advantage of phosphor plate radiography is that it can fit within any pre-existing equipment, and users do not have to modify it because it can replace the existing film. However, this comes with additional costs for replacing scratched plates and scanners.

We are also mindful of oral hygiene concerns and always utilize protective barriers when having patients insert the plates in the mouth. This helps to prevent contamination or spreading of infections. We also make use of other advanced software to not just enhance these images, but also make comparisons with previous digital x-rays.
