Inlays & Onlays
Getting the proper dental implants that you need can be challenging without adequate information and expertise. Here at McDonald Dental we provide top-notch dental inlays and outlays services that are durable and offer exceptional comfort and fit all year round.
Dental inlays and onlays are used to restore a damaged or decayed tooth by strengthening its external and internal structure using foreign materials rather than opting for removal or replacement. In technical terms, inlays are indirect intracoronal restoration procedures while onlays are indirect procedures that restore one or more cusps as well as adjoining or entire occlusal surfaces.
Inlays and onlays are less invasive and offer a more conservative approach to dental restoration than a dental crown. This is because there is no removal of original teeth, and a firm structure is put in place and maintained. We often recommend inlay and onlay restoration for dental conditions that include eroded surfaces or dents that have not affected the core of the tooth. Materials usually used for inlays and onlays include gold, ceramics, and composite.
When Is It Appropriate To Opt For An Inlay Or Onlay Restoration?
Ideally, this procedure is performed on patients whose rear teeth have too much decay to allow for fillings but have enough natural teeth to avoid the need for crowns. We will consider the size and positioning of the restoration and the structure of the remaining tooth. For large restorations, the strength of the restorative material plays a key role. We usually recommend ceramics or gold in this case as both , have the desired properties such as biocompatibility, durability, and aesthetics. The restoration procedure requires at least two appointments or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
Inlays and onlays are a non-invasive restoration technique and can last for many years. They easily outlive Amalgam and the longevity of the restoration largely hinges on how well the procedure was executed as well as factors such as the patient’s oral hygiene, age of the patient, and caries rate. Also, if a fracture is noticed on the tooth that requires restoration, then an inlay or onlay would not be appropriate for this, rather a crown would suffice.
Inlay and Onlay Procedure
The procedure for inlays and onlays are the same in most cases. The first visit includes an exam to confirm suitability for the procedure and removal of any decay. Only a little structuring is required and no extractions. An impression of the teeth is taken to our dental lab. Single visit restorations are available on demand.
A temporary restoration will be placed on the tooth until the permanent inlays and onlays are ready for installment. On the second appointment, our dentist will secure the fabricated models on the teeth to create a stronger structure.
Once a satisfactory fitting is achieved, onlays and inlays are attached to the tooth permanently using special bonding agents and then polished for better aesthetics. If you have further questions about our inlay and onlay dental services, call McDonald Dental at (346) 250-3575 now.
